calderdale woman stops smoking quit west yorkshire

Congratulations to Emma, who is now an ex-smoker with support from Yorkshire Smokefree. After a change in lifestyle she wanted to put down the cigarettes for good. Following her programme at Yorkshire Smokefree, she sat down to speak to us about her experience.

When did you first start smoking?

It was 30 years ago, round about the age of 13 years old. I felt peer pressure to start and then quickly became addicted, before I knew it I was smoking half a pack a day.

How did you access stop smoking support?

I attended weekly group meetings as they were easy to fit around my work and free time. It was great to chat to others who were struggling with similar symptoms and sharing tips on how to overcome these. I found it the whole process really helpful and supportive.

Apart from products, what else helped you to quit and stay smoke free?

Knowing that my family and friends were behind me every step of the way made a big difference.

What do you like about NOT smoking?

I love not having to go out in the cold and miserable weather for a cigarette break and it’s great telling people that I don’t smoke anymore!

Has your health improved since you quit?

Yes – I’m able to breathe so much easier. I can’t believe the difference.

What would you say to anyone who has recently started smoking?

Please don’t do it! It’s not big or clever.
